"Round Trip" Folder: Each day your child will be bringing home a "Round Trip" folder filled with projects from the day and other important information. Please be consistent in checking the folder and returning it to school each morning. The folder provides a great opportunity to communicate with me. Each morning the folder will be put in a basket for me to look through. You can be sure notes are getting in my hands when they are put in the folder.
Communication: One of my main goals for the year will be to involve you in our kindergarten experience. One important way to do this will be through open communication between home and school. If a rewarding or challenging experience arises at school, I will not hesitate to call, email, or write you a note to share this information with you. At the same time, please feel free to contact me at any time regarding questions, concerns, or suggestions. I know we both want the very best for your child and by keeping the communication lines open, I am confident this will be accomplished. Please write me a note, call, or email so we can work through situations together.
Our Active Classroom: Our classroom is a very active, busy place! I feel children learn best by doing. Our math, reading, writing, and word workshops allow the kindergartners to explore learning in a very hands-on way. Smart Shop literacy centers allow students to use multiple intelligence techniques to expand their learning in an independent way. There will be times we will record our learning on paper, but there are also numerous activities where students master kindergarten skills without a paper and pencil. Even though you may not see "papers" coming home, great learning is occurring in our classroom!
Responsive Classroom: Our kindergarten class will be using the Responsive Classroom philosophy that promotes strong community building in our classroom. This philosophy also helps us to create hopes and dreams for the school year. These hopes and dreams lead us to establishing guidelines that create a safe and respectful learning environment. We will work together to reach our kindergarten hopes and dreams! In order to help all students learn, if guidelines are challenged, students will work with the teacher to fix the situation, complete an "action of apology", have a consequence, or lose a privilege. A take-a-break rug is also used to help students gain control. Parents are always involved when a challenging experience occurs.
Volunteers: We LOVE having volunteers in kindergarten! Look for opportunities for helping in the classroom, joining field trips, reading to the class, completing projects at home, and more! We will send a monthly volunteer calendar home so you can sign up. Look for more info to come home.
Snack: We have community snack in our class. Each child is scheduled to bring snack for 2 weeks throughout the year. A schedule will be available at the beginning of the year. A reminder will also be sent home the week before your snack week arrives. Please send enough for 21 students.
Book Orders: Each month a book order form will be sent home with your child. Book orders are a wonderful way to start an inexpensive home library for your child. The book order prices are exceptionally lower than store prices. All orders are placed online. Our classroom code to order online is: H8RX4. More information will be digitally sent in our weekly newsletter.
Absent/Tardy: Please call or email the AES front office if your child will be absent from school. (274.8218) [email protected]
Transportation: I need written communication from home if a child is going home another way than their usual routine. (such as getting picked up or riding a different bus home) If there is a last minute change, please call the AES office (274.8218) and I will receive the message. Thanks for your help with this school policy.
Library: We will visit the AES Media Center every 6 days for a media lesson and book check out. Since our library day will change each week, I will add this to our monthly classroom calendar that is sent home each month. Please make note of these days and help your child to return his/her book so a new one can be checked out.
Phy-ed, Art, and Music: Kindergarten will be on a 4 day rotation for specialists. A monthly calendar will be sent home sharing the specialist schedule. Please be sure your child dresses in appropriate clothes and shoes for phy-ed. If the weather cooperates, the kindergartners will go outside for phy-ed as much as possible. ** Day 1 - phy-ed, Day 2 - art, Day 3 - phy-ed, Day 4 - music.
Recess: Each day the kindergartners will go outside for recess. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately. In the snowy months, this will include boots, hats, mittens, and snow pants.
Book Buddies: Mr. Zuehlke's 5th grade class will be our book buddies this year. These positive role models are always a highlight of our kindergarten week.
Birthdays: We love to celebrate birthdays in kindergarten! If you would like to bring a snack to share with our class, please feel free to bring a store bought item. We have 21 students in our class and 2 teachers/helpers. Unless the entire class is invited to a party, please refrain from sending birthday invitations to school.
